COMFY IN NAUTICAL

i’m actually so happy right now who cares about this

I was going to save this for after work but I feel like this is going to keep bugging me until I post it so yeah.

Bill Doss with The Sunshine Fix and The Olivia Tremor Control was without a doubt one of my most favourite things in music and there hasn’t been a time where their music hasn’t been appropriate for my life, especially OTC. There’s been times where I put on OTC and it’s always been this comfy blanket that I can wrap myself in and feel totally happy and in control of my life. As stupid as that sounds. Whatever. I can’t write right.

When I saw OTC in September I was really fucking happy. The night before the show I made two batches of cookies. I felt crazy, but it was worth it to try and make them happy. I mean, if you’re on a tour and eating at different restaurants wouldn’t you love it if someone made you cookies?

Inside the container I put a note at the last minute - I felt stupid while doing it, but whatever - and told them how much their music meant to me. At the end I wrote “PS: It would be super cool if you played NYC-25!” because I knew they were only playing it at some of their shows (I was checking the setlists religiously).

After taking a five hour bus trip down to Toronto, I waited outside the venue with Matt and Jordan for two and a half hours before the show. What I saw was the band bringing their stuff into Lee’s Palace, and I was incredibly nervous. Finally we got the courage to introduce ourselves to Bill Doss. He was very excited and very friendly when we gave him the cookies. He said he was going to have to hide them from Julian, which was the most adorable thing ever.

I was first in line for the show - occasionally, the band would pop outside for smokes and cell phone calls and they were all really nice to me, which totally blew my mind. As if I was talking to my most favourite band, and they still remembered that I was the crazy fan who gave them the cookies.

We were right in the front for the show. It was awesome. They played every song we wanted them to play and it was amazing. Then they played NYC-25.

I strongly suggest you watch the video from the show above at this point.

The fact that they dedicated my favourite song from my favourite band to me was probably the coolest thing that has ever happened to me. Even months later I’m still absolutely floored by this. I’ve sent the whole band messages over the course of the year telling them exactly how important this was to me and how excited I was. It was awesome.

Today we lost one of the coolest people in music history.

I will always ALWAYS remember your kindness, Bill Doss, and I thank you for making some of the best music in the entire world.

When Matt talks about his computer/hardware problems I always get really sad because my stuff always works perfectly but his never does what he’s looking to do so he does one thing to fix it and make it better and it seems like everything just MELTS or something

matt im sorry

Matt and I have been friends since 2006. That’s six years, give or take.
